Expertise for Exposure

2-day Intensive program

Are you ready to put yourself out there as a thought leader in your space by being on podcasts and panels, speaking at conferences and events, and writing guest blog posts for well-aligned communities, but don’t know where to start? Or, have you been doing that but just aren’t seeing the ROI you were hoping for?

In this 2-day intensive, you’ll work 1:1 with Baily to effectively weave together your personal story + professional expertise + CTA, learn how to pitch + advocate for yourself to partners, events, and content platforms, set quantifiable success metrics so you can measure + evaluate ROI for each opportunity, and leave with the templates, tools, and strategy necessary to pull it all off.

in the last 5 years I’ve:

Spoken at 66 conferences and events

Been interviewed on 33 podcasts

Taught 29 webinars

Been interviewed for quotes in articles 15 times

Been an Emcee/Panel Moderator 13 times

Written 11 guest blog posts

That’s over 160 times that I've been able to get in front of someone else's audience to share my story, knowledge, and CTA (call to action) in exchange for promotion, or as I now refer to it - "Expertise for Exposure". Every single client I’ve ever had has come from one of the above opportunities, and it’s still the primary way I market my business.

But don’t get it twisted - this strategy wasn’t always as beneficial to my business as it is today. I made A LOT of mistakes in the early days, from not having a solid CTA (people are inherently lazy, you have to make it SUPER easy for them to connect with you after every gig) to not asking for measurable promotion from my partners (“exposure” is only valuable if you’re being promoted properly.) Back then I was just excited to be asked to speak or be on a podcast, so I did a very poor job of advocating for my needs in return (or as I now call them, my "Asks".) I was just happy to be asked to the dance, I didn't care that my date was late to pick me up with a busted corsage, took me to McDonald's for our fancy meal, and refused to dance or take one of those cheesy couples photos.

Tell me if this sounds familiar - you've been asked to be a guest on someone's podcast or speak at an event, and you're so flattered that you:

A) Don't question whether the audience is in your target demographic
B) Don't ask for anything in return because they’ve promised you “exposure”
C) Don't have a clear call to action that leads people to connect with you further
D) Walk away feeling like it was fun, but not the best use of your time
E) All of the above ✔️

When you give of your (very limited) time and share your knowledge and experience for a partner's community, but don't receive the measurable promotion necessary to measure any sort of ROI for that opportunity, it can lead to bitterness about the whole operation. Once I realized that was happening for me, I devised a plan to start making these "Expertise for Exposure" gigs work FOR me. This strategy has become the #1 way that I've grown my email list, social following, Facebook community, and podcast subscribers, and it's how I've attracted clients who already feel like they know me by the time they come 'a knocking at the Baily Hancock HQ door.

Some of the most common questions I get from clients are:

  • How do I get asked to be a guest on podcasts and where do I find speaking gigs?

  • How do I make the most out of the opportunities coming my way?

  • How do I know when to say yes or no to an opportunity?

  • What should I be asking for from my partners when I'm speaking/teaching for free in exchange for promotion?

  • How do I establish myself as a thought leader in my space?

  • How can I pitch myself in a way that will make the person I’m reaching out to want to say yes?

Lucky for them (and you!), I have the answers to those questions.

I want you to feel confident putting yourself out there as a damn expert (because you ARE an expert in your business!) to gain credibility through collaboration and grow your community with people who feel like they *get* you before they ever even download your lead magnet. Imposter Syndrome be damned - you don't need another 5 years to feel "ready", the time is now.

why expertise for exposure?

Growing a business can feel super hard, especially if you're a team of one like me and so many of my clients. If you're doing your damnedest to grow your email list, Instagram following, and community but finding it to be easier said than done, I FEEL YOU.

When I left my day job back in October of 2016, I had no idea how I was going to get the word out about what I had to offer (hell, I was still figuring out exactly what it was that I had to offer!) I felt incredibly overwhelmed with the idea of having to learn how to do Facebook promoted posts or master SEO to up my Google rankings or any other digital marketing tactic for that matter.

So I did what I know how to do best - I tapped into my network/community and began finding ways to get myself in front of well-aligned communities of people who could become my clients and future fans. I thought long and hard about what topics I could talk about based on my knowledge, experience, and interests, and made sure everyone around me knew that I was willing and available to speak, teach, guest post, be a podcast guest or panelist for their communities in exchange for exposure for my business. (Click here to get the outreach email template that I use to reach out to potential partners!)

After spending the last 5+ years working one-on-one with over 75 amazing solopreneur clients helping them craft a collaboration strategy to grow their businesses, I realized that the most effective way they could accomplish that with the least amount of money was to share their expertise in exchange for exposure, exactly as I had done to grow my business.

The simple fact is, people buy from people, not companies. They fall in love with brands when they feel connected to the person behind the brand. When you can tell your story and share your knowledge in a way that provides valuable content while also gaining exposure and credibility for your business, you'll grow your following and attract customers who not only want to buy what you're selling, but who are also invested in your success as an entrepreneur.

It's time to stop hiding behind your brand and show the world who you are. Your story is worth sharing, and your message, when shared authentically, will attract more future fans than any promoted post ever could. I've used this strategy for myself for years, now I'm excited to start helping the talented, brilliant, successful people all around me find their voice and discover the perfect channels to share it with.
